Example Cockpit Drill

Handbrake on – gear lever in neutral.
Seat, Mirrors and Head Restraint are adjusted to my satisfaction.
I am familiar with all the controls and instruments.
I am switching on the ignition – all warning lights are illuminated and I have sufficient fuel for the journey (or the fuel gauge is rising).
Depressing the clutch and starting the engine – all warning lights have gone off, except the handbrake.
Fastening Seatbelt and checking that doors are closed. Will passengers please do theirs!
Selecting first gear – looking all around the vehicle and moving off when it is safe to do so.
