The Chelmsford Group has been running a special 'Young Driver Initiative' since 2003.

For young drivers joining the Chelmsford Group before their 26th birthday half of the cost of the Skill for Life course (£79 - see What does it cost?) is refunded once they have passed the IAM test.

The Group offers 'one to one' Observed Drives to help to prepare for the IAMs Advanced Driving Test - assigning an Observer who will arrange mutually convenient times for the Drives. The Group also run 'Fixed Length Advanced Driving Courses' from time to time and these include evening lectures which are held at the Essex Police Sports & Social Club.

Preparation for the Test has been developed, not only to improve the awareness and safety of participants, but also to make driving more fun. Participants get 6 - 8 practice drives with one of the Group's trained Observers as they prepare for the Test. Additional drives may be arranged by mutual agreement.

This initiative is aimed at those who are still under 26 years of age (on the date that the Application is received at IAM HQ). The full Skills for Life Advanced Driving package includes books, the Test fee, and a years membership of both the Group and the IAM. Preparation for the Test is then provided free of charge.
